8/8/12 Internship

On August 8 I worked from 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM for a total of seven hours. I have worked a total of 163 hours this summer at THS. August 8 was my final day interning at Theatre Historical Society. Foy my final day I primarily worked on doing research on several different theatres. The theatres I researched were: the Great Lakes Theatre (Detroit, MI), the Birmingham Theatre (Birmingham, MI), the Fox Wilshire Theatre (Beverly Hills, CA), the Studebaker Theatre (Chicago, IL), the Town Hall Theatre (Toledo, OH), and the Kramer Theatre (Detroit, MI). I was doing research for a chain of theatres that wanted to do an online exhibit on the theatres they owned. For my final day I was also taken out to lunch by some of the staff of THS, which was very nice. Overall I have had an excellent experience interning at THS. I learned a host of skills that will come in handy in the archiving and museum fields (which is what I want to do). Some of the skills I learned included: how to handle archival documents, how to handle archival materials, how to handle archival photos, how to create an exhibit, how to catalogue items received as gifts from people, what is important in starting an archive, and how to run an archive. All of these skills will no doubt be helpful in my future profession and Theatre Historical Society has my gratitude for helping me on my journey.

8/6/12 Internship

On August 6 I worked from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM for a total of seven hours. I have worked for a total of 156 hours this summer at my internship. My next internship session will be my last on Wednesday. After the usual staff meeting I worked on sorting through old magazines that might have useful information on theatres. I also received further training in the “PastPerfect” software, learning how to catalogue a THS member’s donations. This was very useful training since I may eventually be using the software or some form of it in my future occupation.
Some of the magazines I worked on cataloguing and sorting.

I also worked on cataloguing the information on theatres found in some of the books at THS.

One of the donations we received from a THS member. I found it interesting that the tickets were for the "colored balcony."

7/30/12 Internship

On July 30 I worked from 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM for a total of seven hours. I have worked for a total of 149 hours this summer at THS. The previous week I did not attend my internship because of a vacation I took visiting family. After the usual staff meeting everybody attended a tutorial on using the museum and archiving software “PastPerfect.” This was very useful since I am interested in museum and archival work and most small to mid size institutions use the software or something similar. The software helps to catalogue items and keep track of donations and gifts.

7/18/12 Internship

On July 18 I worked from 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM for a total of seven hours. I have worked for a total of 142 hours this summer at THS. I finally finished filing and sleeving old photographs for the collection on July 18. Most of the day was spent on that and helping with the moving of some items to a facility off site.

7/16/12 Internship

On July 16 I worked from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM for a total of seven hours. I have worked for a total of 135 hours at THS this summer. I spent most of the working again on sleeving and filing old photographs of theatres after the usual staff meeting.

7/11/12 Internship

On July 11 I worked from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM for a total of seven hours. I have worked for a total of 128 hours this summer at Theatre Historical Society. I again worked for most of the day sleeving old photographs that needed to be preserved. It has taken a while since there are roughly twelve boxes full of photographs that need to be sleeved.

7/9/12 Internship

On July 9 I worked from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM for a total of seven hours. I have worked for a total of 121 hours this summer at THS. On July 9 we had the usual staff meeting during the first half of the morning. After the meeting I again worked on putting old photographs in sleeves for the rest of the day.

I just really found this picture funny.

7/6/12 Internship

On July 6 I worked from 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM for a total of seven hours. I have worked for a total of 114 hours at THS this summer. On July 6 I spent most of the day working on putting sleeves on photographs for the photograph collections.

7/2/12 Internship

On July 2 I worked from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM for a total of seven hours. I have worked for a total of 107 hours at THS this summer. I worked throughout most of the day housing photographs in new folders. I am nearly finished with the project and will soon be moving on to other tasks. Below are some photographs of the negative I filed. These photographs were taken with permission from THS.

6/27/12 Internship

On June 27 I worked from 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM for a total of seven hours. This day was a major milestone for me in that I have finally worked for a grand total of 100 hours at the THS this summer. Throughout the day I continued to work on housing old photographs. I also helped with small tasks around the office like taking out the garbage since half of the staff is still gone.

6/25/12 Internship

On June 25 I worked from 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM for a total of seven hours. I have worked for a total of 93 hours this summer at THS. On June 25 around half the staff was gone due to the Conclave that is taking place in Sacramento. During the first half of the day I worked on mailing out flyers to THS members about upcoming events. For the second half of the day I continued to work on housing old photographs in new folders.

6/20/12 Internship

On June 20 I worked from 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM for a total of seven hours. I have worked for a total of 86 hours for the THS this summer. On June 20 I worked primarily on doing research of various theatres across America for a customer of the THS. The person who requested the research wanted to find out more about an ancestor of his, Louis Grell, who worked on many murals for theatres throughout the 1920’s. I found some photographs and documents that had information on Grell and photocopied. The theatres I researched were found in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Chicago, Illinois.

6/18/12 Internship

On June 18 I worked from 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM for a total of seven hours. I have worked for a total of 79 hours this summer at THS. On June 18 I worked on continuing to house old photographs. I also worked on organizing some old folders that were out of order. I also did research on the State Theatre in Sandusky, Ohio for a THS customer.
